Hypnotists are certified by a variety of organizations. Hypnotherapy schools are often associated with one of these organizations. Typically, the teaching for each school concentrates in one methodology for hypnotherapy. These different approaches to hypnosis and hypnotherapy are of little concern to most people, other than curiosity.
Because hypnosis helps you update your thinking, about food and eating for example, the exact methodology a hypnotherapist uses is of relatively little concern.
A hypnotist or hypnotherapist (a hypnotist who provides therapeutic suggestions) should be certified by on of the national organizations. This means he or she has receive reliable hypnosis and therapeutic training.

Do they have to be doctors or therapists (Licensed counselors) or is it a certificate for certain hours of training?

I would suggest that you use a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist that has training in NLP. Weight reduction has many aspects and you want to make sure that you have all of your needs met. Find some one you feel you can have rapport with.
